Typography Workshop

 Workshop Notes

- Different styles of fonts are different voices, it could be a whisper, or a shout, the font is someone speaking to you.
- Software is constantly changing, so you need to keep learning. (Quarkexpress)
- You need to learn about the history of graphic design and type, and need to learn keyboard shortcuts to make you work faster.
- Cmd + shift + > bigger text, cmd + shift + < smaller text
- A pt is a 72nd of an inch
- All novels use pt size 8 or 9
- You read magazines further away than you hold a novel, so that is why the type is bigger
- Type design is communicating effectively, making the type readable
- Think about what you need, and what you don't. Don't use more than you need.

We started off the workshop by choosing a font which we thought most represents us. I chose this one because it is neat and organised, while also being quite girly due to the serifs.

This represents a shy dog. I have used a serif font, and placed the dog in the corner of the page, as if it is hiding away. The point size is small, and I have used negative kerning to squish the letters together, as if the dog is protectively curling up.

This represents an angry dog. I have used a bold, sans serif font, and placed the word right in the middle of the page to show it is informal, and grab attention, as angry dog would be loud and crazy. I have used a large font, and altered the height and width of the letters to allow the font to be bigger on my portrait page.

This is a pissed off dog. I have used a sans serif font, as this is more informal, and it is italic, to represent the dog being slouched away. The font size is quite small, as if the dog just can't be bothered. I have placed in lower down in the page, as the dog is not wanting attention, but just to feel sorry for itself. However, I have not placed it right in the corner, as otherwise it would be a shy dog.

We looked at everyone in the groups decisions on where to place the font to see that for the shy dog and the angry dog, many people had very similar ideas. We think these things mean what they do due to the environment we have all been brought up in. For the pissed off dog, ideas were different, showing that people react differently when pissed off.
