Following on from the concept and logos I have already began to develop, which can be seen here, in our third workshop we were set another task.
Task
- 'Package' your good
- You are given 4 different nets, you need to come back with 4 products next week
- Apply your idea creatively, work quickly
- Not just 4 designs, you need to show development
- Must be 2 colours + stock (don't just use what comes out of printer)
- Re-look at logo based on feedback, need to trust the client
Here are the four nets:
- The plans could be for the packaging to be die cut, bring in things we have learnt in Lorenzo's print sessions
- Can add other information rather than just the logo, such as defining what product would be inside, but the main priority is the identity
- Can use different tones, gradients, duetone, as long as only two colour plates would be used
- Need to look at contemporary packaging to help inspire ideas
- Play around
- Create plans both digitally and hand rendered
Designing
Designing
Before I could start designing my packaging, I wanted to develop my logo, picking up on the feedback given to me. I again talked to my tutor, to get some more feedback, and some starting points.
- The font is informal, which represents youth. Too much elegance or a structure type would lose this youth
- When people think of guides they think of badges, so link this back to the logo
- Find out what type of people guides are, and what they like doing. Take a step back to find out more so that the logo will appeal and represent these girls.
- What do guides have in common that would make them want to meet each other?
- Why don't guides go to jamborees?
- How global is a jamboree?
I started with writing down some notes about what guides are like (in general) so that my logo design can bring these things in to it.
- Guides have practical skills - They like to be rewarded - They like to learn and try new things
- Guides motto: 'be prepared' - Guides are a mix of girly and adventurous - Guides are good at planning and are organised - Guides like to make things and cook - Guides now are moving from traditional skills to modern ones - Guides are caring, helpful, fun, like to make friends and help people - Guides volunteer and give up their time - Guides backgrounds are so different: they are form different parts of the country, different religions, different wealths, but all guides are united in the guiding family - Guides like to be able to have a laugh and forget about family/school worries - Guides like to collect - Guides are sensible, and lead others, but love the opportunity to be silly - Guides can be themselves, without fear of being judged - Guides like to continually be improving - Guides like to sing, dance, and have a good time - Guides feel good knowing they have helped others
So, why don't guides go to jamborees already?
- They don't know what they are - They don't know how to apply - They don't know what activities are available - They are worried about the cost - They think they are meant for boys
Things to connote
All these things lead me on to things I want my logos to connote, so that the logo represents the original statements I made about my good.
- Youth - Guiding - Girls - Worldwide - Celebration - Fun - Friendship - Excitement - Festival - Practical - Badges - United
More Logo Designs
While the logo that was chosen for me in my crit wasn't my favourite, I do think it had the opportunity to be transformed in to a logo that could represent my statements. I have continued to develop this logo, taking on board the feedback from others, and trying to include the about things I want to connote through my logo.
Pink stock, blue and white colours
Final Logo
I think this logo has come a long way since I first starting developing it, and I'm happy with the result I have now.
Products
What could these products be?

I have hand drawn my design ideas, then tried to re-create them on illustrator, using the new skills I have been learning in my photoshop, illustrator and in design workshops.
Envelope
- mail shot
- envelope handed out to guides to send to an international friend
Bottle Packaging
- non-alcholic fizzy pink drink
- jamboree gift pack containing camping items

Opening Folder
- could just be an interesting to open leaflet
- could be printed quite large and used as a document holder for other bits
- mini book containing information about the jamboree, with sticker sheet inside
Envelope Folder
- another interesting to open leaflet
- a folder to contain the envelope
- a folder containing the mini book
Final four products
To develop these product designs further I think I need to add more information to the packaging, like I have done in my hand-drawn designs. As the font I have used in hand rendered (then neatened up in illustrator), I would need to create a whole alphabet to add more text. With more time, I could continue to develop these products.

The top image on the left is the logo that was chosen for me, and the one underneath is how I have developed it so that it is more obvious about what it is representing. The image on the left shows part of the development to creating this logo. (163 logos later!)
To continue to edit this logo, I think the next step is to take it into illustrator to continue making edits on that. After a slow struggle, as it has been months since I have used illustrator, I decided that as I was in a bit of a rush for now, I would re-draw the logo accurately, measuring out the positioning of each element, and then scan this in to edit on illustrator.
I found it much easier to edit the logo in illustrator when I had a starting point, which was the scanned image, which I then live traced. I then re-created the circles so they were smoother, and altered the letters so that all the letters that were the same letter were the same. I then neatened all the outlines, to give the logo a smoother look.
Logo explained:
- Everything being inside the circle makes the logo seem like a badge
- Guides and Scouts from across the world greet each other with a handshake, as a token of friendship. The left has is used, as it is the hand nearest the heart.
- I have added together to my original word, celebrate, after suggestions from others. I think this represents my theme of unity better and gives a clearer idea of what a jamboree is about
- I have used a globe as I said in my statements that if my good was an object it would be a globe, as you feel you are seeing all of the world in one place
- I have kept the youthful font, but tried to make it more girly with a few extra flicks
I looked back at my list of things I want my logo to connote and I believe it does represent 9 out of 12 of these keywords. The things it does connote are: youth, guiding, girls, worldwide, celebration, fun, friendship, badges and united.
Colours
For this task, I can only used 2 colours plus stock. Here are some of my ideas for which colours to use.
Girl guiding official colours of blue, pink and white.
Pink stock, blue and white colours
Blue stock, green and pink colours - (The same blue and pink)
Adding colours to the logo
I have added the colours with the techniques I learnt in my illustrator. I wasn't sure which colour scheme worked best, so I asked around, and the agreed favourite was the official colours of girl guiding uk. I'm happy with this choice as these colours look professional, and also they will work with the use of the official girl guiding uk logo.
