Re-Written Final Briefs
Look at these posts to see the development of the briefs. As you can see the fourth brief has changed dramatically, and some are quite different to what I initially thought I would do. These decisions are explained on the relevant blog posts.

Workshop 3: Time Plan
Time Plan
How long are they going to take?
What needs to be done when?
When will the deadline be?
.. 70 and a half days to go ..
Design Process
1. Idea generation
2. Research and investigation
3. Concept development and clarification
4. Design development
5. Evaluation and selection
6. Production and resolution
7. Presentation and submission
Task
Make a timeline for each brief, splitting it in to ten sections including all of the design processes, and how long they should take. Bare in mind that things never go to plan. You always have to allow for something to go wrong. Due to the nature of each brief being different, the time spent on different parts of the process will vary.
I found it quite hard to exactly plan my time for the four briefs because of how I'm certain things will change as my ideas develop. Also, things aren't necessarily always done in the same order, and some things you start, and then have to go back to.
This task has got me thinking about how I need to make the most of every moment here though. I'm going to find my own way of planning my time so each brief gets a fair amount of time spent on it.

Workshop 2: Cross Referencing Briefs with Rationale [Final Statements]
Position Statements & Rationales
Need to be able to show a sense of skills that will be developed, contexts explored, contents researched and products made through these statements.
1. Competition Briefs
A type based, skills driven investigation of a few selected competition briefs from YCN, D&AD and ISTD with a focus on printed outcomes.
I am going to select a range of competition briefs from YCN, D&AD and ISTD with a focus on creating type based outcomes, because this is an area of my practice I want to focus on and a skill I need to improve.
Product / Range / Method of Distribution
Type based outcomes / Depends on brief / Depends on brief
[The YCN & D&AD briefs have not been released yet]
2. Stationery Design
An image based investigation of business and enterprise with a focus on stationery products and packaging
I am going to create a range of potentially sellable stationery designs featuring illustrations because I want to improve these skills, and because I need more experience of working towards live briefs.
Product / Range / Method of Distribution
Product and Packaging for stationery design / Greetings cards, Wrapping paper & tags, Stickers, Postcards, Notebooks, Photo Albums, Storage Boxes, Tea towels, Tote bags, T-shirts, Poster prints, Printed fabric scarves, & Possibly other outcomes / Online, craft fairs, shops
3. Graphic Design Rulebook
An editorial design based investigation of illustrative type with a focus on graphic design rules.
I am going to create a graphic design rulebook because I want to mix my interests with illustration and type in a brief that allows me to work on both of these skills, and because there is a gap in the market for a book for graphic design students which is useful, but still looks attractive.
Product / Range / Method of Distribution
Illustrative type rule book / Book, Merchandise including: bags, t-shirts / Online, shops, distributed in colleges to new students
4. Graphic Design Museum
A research driven investigation of the history of graphic design with a focus on exhibition design
I am going to propose the content and design for a graphic design museum because I want to learn more about the history of graphic design personally, and think that there is a gap in the market for a graphic design museum.
Product / Range / Method of Distribution
Graphic design museum identity / - Tour map - Adverts (different formats: magazine, billboard, bus etc) - Wall hangings - Leaflets about exhibition - Invite for the opening night, mail shot - Postcards / tote bags / t-shirts / products for shop - Signage around museum - Posters - Schools education pack / Competitions / opportunities to join in - Website / Social media set ups - Mock up of exhibit space - Room decorations (quotes on walls etc) - Door shrouds - Floor stickers - Outside banners / Some products would be featured inside the museum, some advertisements would be large scales such as bus stops, billboards etc and some would be small scale in magazines and on websites

Workshop: What you want to do vs. What you need to do [Development]
Follows on from this workshop...
DEVELOPMENT...
At the end of the first workshop, we were set our next task, to keep adding to the sheets, and think about the questions. We need a minimum of 20 responses for each column and a bit more detail for each.
We then need to identify 10 ultimate things that we want and 10 that we need to do from across all sheets and state why.
What you WANT to do sets you apart from others - INNOVATION is driven by you - NEED is driven by the industry.

Workshop: What you want to do vs. What you need to do
BRIEFING...
We started this workshop with a briefing, going over the information we had been given previously. In groups we had to ask questions about things we didn't understand on the briefs, then these were answered for us.
Here are some useful points I got from this session:
- Briefs can change as you come across challenges, and you can learn from these
- Things don't always work as you plan but this can be for the better
- Record and evaluate your ideas to show your development
- The final outcome may be totally different from what you expected because of this journey
- Briefs run together until the final deadline but it is up to you how you work them
- Need a plan to work out what will be done when
- Crits - Bring what you want feedback on and prepare questions for what you want answers on
- Need an actual bibliography document with referencing of key websites and books in preparation for the final major project. (Like your own book list of sources)
- Will be writing an overall general rationale with what direction you are going in as well as a rationale for each brief
- For each brief ask what + why and how does it contribute to the overall rationale?
- Can put confidential things you don't want to put on blog in folder
- Make your own work live - sell/display at public places, send out to relevant people
- Create an event
- For hand in: 3-6 A2 printed boards - plan printing time!

Significant Neogatied Briefs
For this brief, we need to choose a minimum of four briefs to work on for the rest of this module (ending december), which has to include at least one competition brief.
I have decided to put some of my similar briefs together, as I think that individually they were a bit too short, so now, I have briefs which have a substantial about of work.
I have included which brief number I had initially labelled these as in regards to my previous blog posts.
1. (Brief 5 + Brief 7) Competition Briefs - Incl. Type only designs & D&AD and YCN entry

DP3/ Negotiated Briefs _ Progression
Trying to decide what my strongest briefs are
In order of preference & why
Ones I definitely want to do __
/1/ History of the internet (loved Bradford media museum exhibition - interesting topic)
/2/ Womens magazine (relevant to dissertation and design practice)
/3/ Competition Briefs (I want to win another award!)
/4/ LCA Degree Signage & Yearbook (good chance to collaborate and make work live)
/5/ History of graphic design (interesting and useful research)
Ones I'm not sure about / need work on __
/6/ Retail and promotion / cross course (promote myself through someone else)
/7/ Skills driven type (need to improve type skills)
/8/ Live branding (need more people to brand!)
/9/ Product design (could this work with both busy schedules?)
/10/ Graphic design rule book (do I want to step away from illustrative work?)
UPDATE.
Decided to change the live branding brief to a competitive pitch for the surface pattern yearbook design after talking about a collaboration with other graphic designers. Now feel a lot more excited about this brief and think the outcome and experience of working with three other designs will be a lot more useful to my progress.

Design Practice 3 / Initial Ideas
Before I decide which ideas to actually follow up, I've brainstormed some of my initial ideas. Then I'll choose the ones that are most relevant to the areas of practice I want to focus on, and the ones that I think I'll get the most out of by completing. I want to learn new things and this will be my last chance to do what I want to do, before I work for others and just do what they want me to!
- Women's magazine suitable for feminists, relates to my dissertation (research)
- Book about the history of the internet, inspired by Bradford Media Museum exhibition (research)
- Fictional rebrand of a cafe / packaging / promotion / retail (skills driven)
- Do editorial images for a whole newspaper for a month to improve image skills (skills driven)
- Photography collaboration with another student (skills driven / collaboration)
- Create signage and retail set up for a fictional fashion shop and create packaging, cover promotion (collaboration)
- A fictional graphic design shop selling fonts etc, chance to learn more about graphic design (research)
- A LCA graphic design magazine featuring students work (live)
- Graphic design museum set up, covering promotion / signage / etc, chance to learn about the history (research)
- Rules for graphic design students, illustrated book with type, infographics etc (skills driven)
- Creating the branding for a series of upcoming designers (live)
- Working with another LCA graphic design student to enter college competitions (competition / collaboration / live)
- Entering new competition briefs, writing my own based on old ones (competition)
- Cross course collaboration, working with printed textiles students creating our own range of products and packaging (collaboration)
- Creating type only posters from old ISTD briefs in an attempt to improve type skills (skills driven)

Design Practice 3 / Negotiated Briefs
Summer Brief
Identify and formally present a set of 10 briefs (supported by statement of intent and initial research and development for each) that you intend to respond to during level 6 of the programme. The briefs should reflect your emerging interests in professional Graphic design practices.
We are directing our own practice for Level 06. For each brief consider: why you are choosing them, what you aim to learn and what work you will have for your portfolio.

Things to Consider
- What skills do I want to develop and how can the briefs support this?
- What subjects am I interested in and how can the brief accommodate this investigation?
- What audiences and contexts do I want to design for and why?
- What do you aim to get from collaborative/ live briefs?
Notes
- Need to have a significant amount of work for each brief
- Will do about 5 of these briefs before christmas, others may lead on to fmp
- Use live briefs, take a brief, modify deliverables, use competition briefs as a starting point
- Brief writing tutorials after summer
- Consider what the product/range/distribution will be and brainstorm ideas for all 10
- Live briefs could include pitches for yearbook and degree shows
- Decide which briefs you will do straight away
- What do you want to do? What do you need to do?
