OUGD203. YCN. Evaluation

YCN...
1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
With this being a collaborative brief, my teamwork skills have improved. I was nervous about how I would find working with one person for such a long time before starting this brief, but I ended up realising that there are many benefits to collaborative work. The main one for me was that having someone to continually look at what you have designed is like constantly having a crit, so I kept getting feedback, which definitely helped improve my designs and made any mistakes were spotted. Next year I would like to do collaborative work again as I think it can really benefit my progress.
I have improved my presentation skills, as the final boards were such an important part of this brief, that we had to focus on them, and make sure they were perfect and there were no mistakes. Also with Chloe being a type person, while I am more of an image person, I learnt from her, and this can be seen in the boards, which are far more professional and look so much better than the boards I created for the print module. This will really help as in future I will have to create presentation boards for each brief.
2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?
This brief has been focusing on promotion, which is a different approach to design production than what I am used to. It will help in future, as when I create a product, I can also consider how I will promote this product, rather than it existing out of context.
Most of the designs I have done have been digital, but we also did some laser cutting, which is something new to me. I was really pleased with the results from this and think my work can improve from making the most of this in the future.
This is the first time I ever used photos that weren’t mine and I thought I would have preferred to use my own, however, I understand this is more realistic, as designers work with photographers and other designs in a real design job.
3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalize on these?
After having my tutorial during this brief, I now understand what I need to do to improve my grades and therefore my design work. This is to link what I put on my design context blog to the work I am creating, this helping me to try new things and create better designs. I have tried to do this throughout my designs in this brief, and I have definitely noticed the improvement, so I will continue to do this in future. For example, with the websites I have created designs for, I would have previously designed one that I thought was okay and just gone with it. However, here, I have created many spin offs, before asking others and working with Chloe to decide which one works best, in the end, creating a far better design than I would have done initially.
I think the work I have created appeals to the target audience, which is something we have considered as it was an important part of the brief. We did a lot of research in to Peacocks and its target audience to ensure our designs were relevant. Through this brief I have kept re-reading the brief and considering what needs to be done, so that I don’t go off track. I will continue to do this, so that I create work that answers the brief as it should.
I think that overall my designs look better, this is partly because of the constant feedback helping me to improve my work. Also mocking my designs up in context helps everything to become more realistic so this is something I will make sure I keep up to keep improving.
4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these more fully?
A weakness is that I didn’t produce as much work as I normally would do. This is because I wanted to work at the same pace as Chloe so that I wasn’t taking over and so that our work loads could be similar, however, I have learnt that in group work this never really happens. I don't think our work loads ended up being the same, I think I worked very hard on this brief and made a lot of decisions and did a lot of design work, which I hope is clear through my contribution boards, but at the same time, I couldn't have done this without Chloe's feedback and the research that she did. I think I have ended up creating better quality work by creating less, but in future I need to find the right balance of quality and quantity of work, to improve my overall outcomes.
I am happy with what I did produce, and think I have learnt a lot, but I think next time I really need to push myself to do more, and do things differently, to create a more exciting outcome.
5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?
-1- Cover a wider range of materials to create a greater quantity of work and make the project more believable.
-2- I would have liked to create an actual working website to show the website design is suitable, creating design for screen which is different from my usual printed outcomes.
-3- I will think bigger, think beyond the obvious to create an outcome that really stands out - as this is what is needed for a competition entry.
-4- I would like to take my own photos, and improve my photography skills, to enhance my outcomes.
-5- I would have liked to have print more things rather than just mocking them up in context, as I think things look better when they are printed, if they are designed to be, as stock choices can really effect the final outcome.
6. How would you grade yourself on the following areas
(5= excellent 4=very good 3=good 2=average 1=poor)
Attendance = 4
Punctuality = 4
Motivation = 3
Commitment = 4
Quantity of work produced = 2
Quality of work produced = 3
Contribution to the group = 4

YCN... Final Boards / Submission

Final Boards

[ with changes after presentation feedback ]

Proof of Submission to YCN

YCN... Text for Boards

Here is the text we have written for the boards. This needs to be kept short with just the most important information so the people looking at it don't get put off.

1.

BACKGROUND

Peacocks was one of the UK’s leading value fashion retailers, offering clothes, shoes and accessories for women, men and children before going in to administration in January. They launched a collaboration range with Pearl Lowe, modelled by her daughter Daisy Lowe in 2009.

OBJECTIVE

To expand Peacocks' customer base and enhance fashion credentials to appeal to a younger audience.

SOLUTION

We have created a well needed improvement in the advertisements of Peacocks. With the recent take-over of the company we believe this is our opportunity to create a buzz to increase brand awareness to the target audience.

TARGET AUDIENCE

Our campaign is aimed at a fashion conscious young audience, specifically 18-24 year olds. The Pearl Lowe range is attractive to both younger and older audiences, and we have kept the existing logo to keep from excluding the current customers.

SPECIFICATIONS

We have used the fonts Perpetua and Travelling Typewriter, to get a mix of elegance and the vintage summer theme. We have changed the logo to all black, and used the colour scheme of black, white, and pink C1 M10 Y5 K0. We have printed on to 280 GSM white card.

COUNTDOWN

The countdown is for the re-launch of the website and the brand's new identity. It will be displayed on the Peacocks website, which is currently unavailable, with no sign of when it will come back.

2.

TONE OF VOICE

The inconsistency of the stores identity is something we recognised, so we created a consistent tone of voice in regards to all aspects of the companies promotion. Our designs  are appropriate for our target audience, with an emphasis on timeless style.

EVENT

Our advertising campaign is focused around the Peacocks re-launch party, where the new summer range by Pearl Lowe will be unveiled, and modelled on the catwalk by Pearl's daughters Daisy and Betty Lowe.

INVITATION

This invitation will be sent to fashion magazines and celebrities, so it is elegant and stylish to capture the attention of the recipient. The sleeve has been die cut on to 280 GSM card, and the invitation inside has been duplexed with the same card and black stock of equal weight behind it.

LABELS

As with the invite, the labels for the clothing have been die cut and duplexed, with the existing logo, in a simplified version. These reiterate the new tone of voice for Peacocks, with a simple aesthetic.

3.

WEBSITE

The current Peacocks website is down, so we have proposed a new design. It is consistent with the rest of the products we have created and is attractive to the target audience. The website will be re-launched on the day of the party.

BLOG

The updated blog will start with news from the launch party, and is updated regularly to keep customers interested.

4.

NEWSLETTER

A newsletter is sent out weekly to offer exclusive discounts and promote the latest ranges, to keep in regular contact with the customer.

NEW IDENTITY

We have created designs for the in store way finding and signage that are consistent with our tone of voice.

5.

LARGE SCALE ADVERTISEMENTS

Our advertising campaign will be displayed on bus stops, billboards and in magazines.

YCN... Presentation Boards / Feedback

Presentation Boards

We have been thinking about what we will need on our presentation boards that we will submit along with our final pieces for the OUGD203 module. We need to hand in 5 a2 boards. These boards will be different to the ones we submit for YCN.

- Concept / Peacocks Research (survey, history and info about peacocks, what the problem is, what we intended to do)

- Design Context Research (graphic design / things that have inspired us and why)

- Potential Solutions (our ideas, what we thought about doing, proposed ideas)

- Visual Development (the development of our actual idea)

- Resolution (photographs of final piece)

The YCN boards will be about the final piece.s We will have about 5 landscape boards, probably a2 format also, sent as a PDF.

Here are the submission guidelines from YCN:

A PDF presentation is our ideal way to see your work: please ensure that each page of your PDF is labelled with your full name. Please clearly explain the ideas behind your entry by providing a supporting typed document, this can be a short statement explaining your idea, or by annotating your PDF. As always we are hopeful and expectant of the same loving attention to detail in the presentation and layout of your ideas.
To submit your work as part of this year's YCN Student Awards please carefully complete the form below. You will need to zip up a folder containing all items into one file - and upload just that. If you have worked on more than one brief you will need to enter each separately.

Here are my ideas for what the boards could be about:

- Concept

- Website Design

- Mailshot / Event

- New identity: bags, labels, window displays, posters

Boards at stage of crit

Boards

1. The concept / countdown / proposed order of release
2. Invite / explain event / tags [printed outcomes]
3. Website / mocked up [digital outcome]
4. Blog / poster / newsletter [other outcomes]

Feedback

Here is the feedback we received about our boards, as well as some other things I thought about while John was talking about the mistakes he had spotted in peoples boards:

- The text at the bottom needs to be in three columns with defined bold headers, rather than all in one long line as this is boring to read
- Correct the layout and make sure they all match and are the same
- Make another line at the top to put the peacocks logo on every board and to make our names obvious
- Include contact details
- Shrink file size for upload
- Check spelling
- Make the boards stand out somehow
- Make sure boards tell the story of your product
- Make sure boards match the product
- Consider duplication - e.g. some shots are too similar, also don't use the same word too many times
- Put 1:4 not 1/4
- Could do a front page with info on it
- Look at sentence structure - make sure there are no word widows
- Make sure the boards work on screen as well as printed
- Keep it concise
- Get boards printed in digital print
- Spelling mistake on invite: unveiling, also each sentence needs a full stop
- Don't write we hope - be assertive and show confidence in designs
- Re-consider the layout of the board with the website pages in it
- Line up the line at the bottom with the edge of the image
- Write the specific gsm the invite was made with
- Make sure gaps between things are all the same size

YCN... Final Window Display

In my initial post about what could go in the windows, [see blog post], I'd got a bit stuck as I thought my ideas were taking me away from graphic design and more towards fashion merchandising. So, to keep it simple, I've decided that the posters I created, that me and Chloe both agreed on, would look better in the windows. I also think the initial illustrator mock up of the store front is a bit too complicated, with too much unnecessary detail, so it would be better to do another quick mock up of a store front with only the basic detail needed on it. Also, it would be better to include the Peacocks logo as me and Chloe have been using it with a black line underneath and a white background, rather than the original logo.

I have created these mock ups of store front, magazine spread, billboard and bus stop:

And later we decided the newsletter would fit in better if it was mocked up on a Mac:

I have placed the designs in the mock ups, altering the perspective and warping them so that they fit in with the mock ups.

These are very simple but definitely an improvement on the first shop front I made.

YCN... Shopping Pages

//

Research

I've looked at these pages from the miss guided website, as well as all the other fashion retailers websites, to help me think about how to lay out the images.

//

Pearl's Dresses

As the clothes I had found for the Pearl Lowe range were from the Christmas collection, I needed to find some clothes to put on the shopping page from her Summer collection to match the vintage summer theme. Here are some of the dresses I found. They are so pretty I wish I had known about this range when it was available!

//

My Shopping Pages

I've chosen my favourite of the dresses to appear on the shopping page. I've set it out a bit different to how the websites I looked at in my research set out their shopping pages, to get the whole dress featured.

YCN... Blog

BACKGROUND //

Chloe found that Peacocks did have a blog, that talked about their products, as well as what celebrities were wearing, fashion advice, what the trends were etc. When Peacocks went into administration, this blog froze, and hasn't been updated since. Its not set out well and wasn't advertised very well at all, so I bet this went quite unnoticed.  This blog was even interactive with competitions such as this:

This blog could have been a good opportunity to attract a younger audience, however, like the rest of Peacocks methods of promotions, it just wasn't reaching the audience.

UPDATED //

Using the vintage layout I created for the website, I am going to update the blog. If it looks more attractive, and there is some sort of incentive to follow the blog, more people will look at it, and therefore, Peacocks can use this blog to promote its products and build up a loyal customer base. The blog needs to be easy to find, so I have included a link to it on the website and also on the newsletter. The blog would need to be updated regularly to keep customers interest, and have exclusive offers that people wouldn't be able to find otherwise.

YCN... Websites & Newsletters In Context

For our presentation boards that we will be sending to YCN, we want our final pieces to displayed in context. So I have mocked up my final website design as if it really is on the Peacocks website. I thought we should include a 'P' logo

Idea //

Mocked up on webpage //

Blog Mocked Up //

I've also made the blog look more realistic by putting it into context.

Newsletter mocked up on email //

Chloe mocked up the newsletter I created on to a hotmail e-mail account to make it look more realistic.

YCN... Website Pages

//

After feedback from the crit and mine and Chloe's discussion, I am creating more pages for the website to make it seem even more realistic.

DAISY LOWE SWIMWEAR

I have found that Daisy Lowe also has a logo for her range, which is good because I can use this on her page and make it match the Pearl Lowe page. I've looked on the internet for photos of this swimwear range.

The page design is the same as the homepage, but with the new edited image on it. I've used the vintage filters on these images so they match the style of the rest of the website and images.

3. CHILDREN'S RANGE

Pearl Lowe's children's range is another Peacocks range that wasn't really heard of much, so its important to include this as well. These photographs were already edited so that they looked vintage, but I have added the same filters I have to the other imagery to try and get everything to match it.

4. FASHION BLOGGER COMPETITION

This last page is a bit different, as it is about the competition that will be launched in conjunction with the blog. This is based on my experiments for text and image, as inspired by what I found on the Forever 21 website. [see blog post]

//

Chloe designed this count down page for what will go on the Peacocks website, counting down until the re-launch.

YCN... Final Crit

Our Work

For the final crit, we have to show:

Final Designs
- my website design
- my newsletter design
- chloe's invite design

And the concept for the bags and window display.

Chloe has also mocked up some boards showing our progress. We can also leave my blog open during the crit to help people understand what we have done. We will be getting some final feedback as we have less than a week to finish this project! We present it on Tuesday 27th, and it needs to be sent in the form of presentation boards to YCN before the 30th.

1. Mailshot / What party is about

2. Website / Shows vintage theme

3. Newsletter design / Window display

4. USP - Recycling Concept

Feedback from Others

Again we started this crit with choosing five questions we wanted answering to get the best suited feedback:

1. What impression do you get from the type writer type face? Does it match the rest of the pages theme?
2. What do you think of the layout of the website?
3. How can we push our solutions further?
4. How can we improve our boards?
5. Does the vintage theme link and is it obvious?

I have typed up the feedback we received:

1//

STRENGTHS

- Fonts are well chosen, suited to the brief and the tone of voice
- Website is clear and seems easy to navigate
- Photos fit very well with overall aesthetic

AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT

- There needs to be an outline of what the brief is about on the boards
- On the invite the text on the back is too small
- Mock ups of the invite need to be made and photographed to improve boards

CONSIDERATIONS

- For going green, using green on the bags would be too obvious, be clever with it and make sure the bags fit in with the rest of the campaign aesthetically
- Focus more on your vintage approach, its really strong and current, roll this out across the whole range
- Spelling errors on boards

2//

STRENGTHS

- Type face works well with the vintage feel and gives the brand a more fashionable feel
- Clean, good consistent layout - very nice
- Vintage style works

AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT

- Check spelling
- Develop ideas/solutions so that they stand out and make sure everything is connected
- Make the invitations stand out - use foil? Use the pink website tabs colour rather than the Peacocks blue
- Label boards and explain what you have done, intended to design and why, and what the problem was
- Layout of boards need to be consistent

CONSIDERATIONS

- Name each page
- Make your concept and the problem you are trying to solve clearer in the boards
- Use the typewriter font throughout - put it on the invitations, bags and on the name of the collection on the boards
- Maybe for the board appearance have the light pink as a background instead of the white
- Make sure all pages connect visually
- Make titles clearer on each board

Action Plan

After talking about the feedback and what people had suggested we also thought of some things that needed changing ourselves.

- Keep the colour in the invite consistent with the other products and use the white border as used in the photos
- Mock up the newsletter on an email setting so it is obvious what it is
- For the website, make pages as if you can actually shop with the individual dresses
- Make a blog to match with the same headers
- Need an envelope to put the address on for the mail shot
- Make a countdown to the re-launch of the website to put on the Peacocks homepage for now before proposed re-launch
- Mock up how website looks on an iPhone
- Make a page for the website showing the kids Pearl Lowe range
- Make the invite triplex with the pinky colour as the middle paper
- Make the image in the website design more central rather than having columns
- For one of the 3/4 - Daisy Lowe's swimwear and one with the children's range

BOARDS

- On the boards write the proposed order of things happening / launching
- Put concept statement on boards
- Make sure your audience is stated
- State the title of the problem you are solving
- State specifications such as stock choices, colours and typefaces
- Things you can't show but want to
- Name, what brief you're answering, college, contact details and number the boards
- Work on board layout, use Indesign rather than illustrator
- 5 A2 boards that tell your story between 100-120dpi PDF file
- Print boards for next weeks presentation

Monday - print, make and photograph final products and put on boards
