Product / Range / Distribution... Competition Briefs

Brief

Take a couple of dead competition briefs (past deadline) and use them to help you write your own proposal for next year, allowing you to investigate which areas you are interested in.

The preparatory research will be finding your area of focus and finding some examples of this. The outcome can be print, digital or a mix of media.

5 Core Areas: (All may be inter-related)

- publishing & editorial
- information & wayfinding
- branding & identity
- product & packaging
- retail & promotion

Competition Briefs

Task

Look through the competition briefs and choose 1 d&ad, 1 ycn, 1 istd and 1 other brief. Analyse why you chose it, is it because of the subject matter or deliverables? Etc....

There will later be a workshop about how to make these in to our own brief

Looking Through The Briefs

I started out by finding which ones were relevant and may be of interest before deciding on the four I'd be re-writing in the  workshop after Easter. Having already looked at the YCN briefs, I knew which briefs I definitely didn't want to do already. Some of the briefs are really badly written so I would have to have a really good look in to them if that was what I wanted to do.

Here are all the briefs I have considered:

D&AD....

PENGUIN

Grimm's Fairy Tales by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm

From the land of fantastical castles, vast lakes and deep forests, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm collected a treasury of fairy stories full of giants and dwarfs, witches and princesses, magical beasts and cunning children. From classics such as 'The Frog-Prince' and 'Hansel and Grettel' to the delights of 'Ashputtel' or 'Old Sultan', all hold a timeless magic which has enthralled children for centuries.
Grimm's Fairy Tales has been translated into more than 160 languages and was first published in English in 1812. Puffin will be celebrating the book's 200th anniversary in 2012.
Students are invited to design a whole new cover look for this classic, in order to reinventGrimm's Fairy Tales for a new generation of readers, encouraging children (and adults) to revisit it time and time again, and ensuring that it remains an integral part of childhood.
Your cover design needs to include all the cover copy as supplied and be designed to the specified design template (cut-down B format, 178mm high x 129mm wide, spine 28.2mm wide).
Conqueror, the global premium paper brand from Arjowiggins Creative Papers of Paris, France, announced its Typographic Games. This graphic design and typographic poster competition issues a challenge on the theme of sport and on the phrase "It’s not what you win, but how you conquer it."

The condition of women has undergone undeniable improvements during the last century. But these improvements haven’t happened everywhere and even where they have been the strongest, well, they are far from being strong enough.
Gender inequality still lingers unchallenged: it’s one of those things that are hard to see precisely because they are right in front of our eyes.
That’s why we ask all of you to see beyond the status quo and imagine a different future. We need gender equality now, because more opportunities for women are more opportunities for us all.

Illustration //

Self-initiated, commissioned but not published, personal or experimental work, which has not been commissioned or published, etc.
Any illustration work, first created or published from January 2008 through August 2012 is eligible. There is no limit to how many works each illustrator can submit.

Your brief is to interpret the theme of ’Tales of Magical objects’ in whatever style or media you choose. A narrative (storytelling) element is important, however surreal or oblique you may wish to make it. The starting point of your work should be taken from the "Amulets and Charms" collection at the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford (UK).

~~~~ Creating a website for PPD Study Task 6 - Spreading the word ~~~~
Session 1:
Identify purpose of a website
Identify target audience
Identify the audience needs
Demonstrate understanding of interface and basic layout techniques
Purpose
Making an online portfolio for ourselves to showcase our work, to get more work out of it - employment or freelance
Target audience
Design studios, corporate clients, events / exhibitions, independent buyers, awards, target like minded people to get them to blog about you
What do these audiences needs to see?
Your work, contact details, be careful to show that what you're selling is aimed at your target audience, do your research by looking at existing websites
Creating a website
  • Put together a scamp - a sketch of a layout for the website, produce at least 3 designs to present to the client for them to chose what to go with
  • Create a site map - helps you identify what content is needed on what pages
  • Write a contract and get the client to sign it so they can't just keep getting you to make changes
  • Ask the client to send you any screenshots of websites they already like the look of to inspire you
  • You have 3-5 seconds to grab a web users attention!!
  • Look at websites and think of what the first words that come to your mind are and why
  • There are web standards you need to adhere to, but you have to bend some of the rules to be original but don't confuse people
  • Try and keep the amount of links down to about 5 to make navigation easy to use
  • A good website should be easy to navigate with the buttons in the same place each page, should never move because it might go off screen
  • Your work should be what stands out so your work is the main attraction not the website
  • Indexhibit - all about the content
  • Design agencies often prefer websites you have designed yourself rather than using a template like indexhibit
  • Avoid using animation as it looks too much
  • Websites normally always scroll down and scrolling across does not adhere to web standards
  • Lightbox effect - have images load over the top of something rather than take to a new page
Task
Find websites that go against web standards - do they work or not? Get some screen shots
Think about how to navigate, whats on the home page etc
vickiandlaura.co.uk
mikebaileygates.com
thisiscollate.com
monsieurcabinet.com - navigation always at the top so the navigation isn't lost as you scroll
awwwards - website awards
[see blog post]
Designing
What pages do you need?
- Home - Work - About - Contact - Twitter / FB etc [if appropriate]
Don't put all your work up, only the best
Could put about on the home page
Could split work in to categories such as print / screen
Web standards
Web safe fonts - choose font family
If you want to use other fonts have to create it as an imgae
Web safe colours
Double click on colour picker on photoshop and check only web safe colours
Adobe kuler website
Sizes
Webstandard landscape rectangle 8:6 ratio
Photoshop - new document - preset web
Size depends on who will be visiting the website 800x600 fits on any screen
Copyright
Can only put your own work on [so can't put Peacocks website on as I don't own copyright]
For next session
Find some examples of good websites that inspire you and make some notes on them, think about the content, how big the logo is, navigation, what people are putting on and then start designing your own, make note of web safe colour, font family, sizes, where the navigation is etc. Put together a scamp and a content map. Three variations of scamps, and get some feedback.
YCN... Final Boards / Submission
Final Boards
[ with changes after presentation feedback ]
Proof of Submission to YCN
YCN... Text for Boards
Here is the text we have written for the boards. This needs to be kept short with just the most important information so the people looking at it don't get put off.
1.
BACKGROUND
Peacocks was one of the UK’s leading value fashion retailers, offering clothes, shoes and accessories for women, men and children before going in to administration in January. They launched a collaboration range with Pearl Lowe, modelled by her daughter Daisy Lowe in 2009.
OBJECTIVE
To expand Peacocks' customer base and enhance fashion credentials to appeal to a younger audience.
SOLUTION
We have created a well needed improvement in the advertisements of Peacocks. With the recent take-over of the company we believe this is our opportunity to create a buzz to increase brand awareness to the target audience.
TARGET AUDIENCE
Our campaign is aimed at a fashion conscious young audience, specifically 18-24 year olds. The Pearl Lowe range is attractive to both younger and older audiences, and we have kept the existing logo to keep from excluding the current customers.
SPECIFICATIONS
We have used the fonts Perpetua and Travelling Typewriter, to get a mix of elegance and the vintage summer theme. We have changed the logo to all black, and used the colour scheme of black, white, and pink C1 M10 Y5 K0. We have printed on to 280 GSM white card.
COUNTDOWN
The countdown is for the re-launch of the website and the brand's new identity. It will be displayed on the Peacocks website, which is currently unavailable, with no sign of when it will come back.
2.
TONE OF VOICE
The inconsistency of the stores identity is something we recognised, so we created a consistent tone of voice in regards to all aspects of the companies promotion. Our designs  are appropriate for our target audience, with an emphasis on timeless style.
EVENT
Our advertising campaign is focused around the Peacocks re-launch party, where the new summer range by Pearl Lowe will be unveiled, and modelled on the catwalk by Pearl's daughters Daisy and Betty Lowe.
INVITATION
This invitation will be sent to fashion magazines and celebrities, so it is elegant and stylish to capture the attention of the recipient. The sleeve has been die cut on to 280 GSM card, and the invitation inside has been duplexed with the same card and black stock of equal weight behind it.
LABELS
As with the invite, the labels for the clothing have been die cut and duplexed, with the existing logo, in a simplified version. These reiterate the new tone of voice for Peacocks, with a simple aesthetic.
3.
WEBSITE
The current Peacocks website is down, so we have proposed a new design. It is consistent with the rest of the products we have created and is attractive to the target audience. The website will be re-launched on the day of the party.
BLOG
The updated blog will start with news from the launch party, and is updated regularly to keep customers interested.
4.
NEWSLETTER
A newsletter is sent out weekly to offer exclusive discounts and promote the latest ranges, to keep in regular contact with the customer.
NEW IDENTITY
We have created designs for the in store way finding and signage that are consistent with our tone of voice.
5.
LARGE SCALE ADVERTISEMENTS
Our advertising campaign will be displayed on bus stops, billboards and in magazines.
YCN... Presentation Boards / Feedback
Presentation Boards
We have been thinking about what we will need on our presentation boards that we will submit along with our final pieces for the OUGD203 module. We need to hand in 5 a2 boards. These boards will be different to the ones we submit for YCN.
- Concept / Peacocks Research (survey, history and info about peacocks, what the problem is, what we intended to do)
- Design Context Research (graphic design / things that have inspired us and why)
- Potential Solutions (our ideas, what we thought about doing, proposed ideas)
- Visual Development (the development of our actual idea)
- Resolution (photographs of final piece)
The YCN boards will be about the final piece.s We will have about 5 landscape boards, probably a2 format also, sent as a PDF.
Here are the submission guidelines from YCN:
A PDF presentation is our ideal way to see your work: please ensure that each page of your PDF is labelled with your full name. Please clearly explain the ideas behind your entry by providing a supporting typed document, this can be a short statement explaining your idea, or by annotating your PDF. As always we are hopeful and expectant of the same loving attention to detail in the presentation and layout of your ideas.
To submit your work as part of this year's YCN Student Awards please carefully complete the form below. You will need to zip up a folder containing all items into one file - and upload just that. If you have worked on more than one brief you will need to enter each separately.
Here are my ideas for what the boards could be about:
- Concept
- Website Design
- Mailshot / Event
- New identity: bags, labels, window displays, posters
Boards at stage of crit
Boards
1. The concept / countdown / proposed order of release
2. Invite / explain event / tags [printed outcomes]
3. Website / mocked up [digital outcome]
4. Blog / poster / newsletter [other outcomes]
Feedback
Here is the feedback we received about our boards, as well as some other things I thought about while John was talking about the mistakes he had spotted in peoples boards:
- The text at the bottom needs to be in three columns with defined bold headers, rather than all in one long line as this is boring to read
- Correct the layout and make sure they all match and are the same
- Make another line at the top to put the peacocks logo on every board and to make our names obvious
- Include contact details
- Shrink file size for upload
- Check spelling
- Make the boards stand out somehow
- Make sure boards tell the story of your product
- Make sure boards match the product
- Consider duplication - e.g. some shots are too similar, also don't use the same word too many times
- Put 1:4 not 1/4
- Could do a front page with info on it
- Look at sentence structure - make sure there are no word widows
- Make sure the boards work on screen as well as printed
- Keep it concise
- Get boards printed in digital print
- Spelling mistake on invite: unveiling, also each sentence needs a full stop
- Don't write we hope - be assertive and show confidence in designs
- Re-consider the layout of the board with the website pages in it
- Line up the line at the bottom with the edge of the image
- Write the specific gsm the invite was made with
- Make sure gaps between things are all the same size
YCN... Final Window Display
In my initial post about what could go in the windows, [see blog post], I'd got a bit stuck as I thought my ideas were taking me away from graphic design and more towards fashion merchandising. So, to keep it simple, I've decided that the posters I created, that me and Chloe both agreed on, would look better in the windows. I also think the initial illustrator mock up of the store front is a bit too complicated, with too much unnecessary detail, so it would be better to do another quick mock up of a store front with only the basic detail needed on it. Also, it would be better to include the Peacocks logo as me and Chloe have been using it with a black line underneath and a white background, rather than the original logo.
I have created these mock ups of store front, magazine spread, billboard and bus stop:
And later we decided the newsletter would fit in better if it was mocked up on a Mac:
I have placed the designs in the mock ups, altering the perspective and warping them so that they fit in with the mock ups.
These are very simple but definitely an improvement on the first shop front I made.
YCN... Shopping Pages
//
Research
I've looked at these pages from the miss guided website, as well as all the other fashion retailers websites, to help me think about how to lay out the images.
//
Pearl's Dresses
As the clothes I had found for the Pearl Lowe range were from the Christmas collection, I needed to find some clothes to put on the shopping page from her Summer collection to match the vintage summer theme. Here are some of the dresses I found. They are so pretty I wish I had known about this range when it was available!
//
My Shopping Pages
I've chosen my favourite of the dresses to appear on the shopping page. I've set it out a bit different to how the websites I looked at in my research set out their shopping pages, to get the whole dress featured.
