- Outcome needs to work across a range of media, scales, formats, products
- Propose what it could be even if you can't actually do it
- What elects of briefs are you interested in? Write your own based on this.
- Products and presentation boards [pdfs] boards needed
- What does it look like in context?
Considerations
- What is the problem? Can take from one of the briefs or parts from all of them
- What will you produce? To solve the problem you have identified
- What are the range of products and what is the method of distribution?
- Consider all the possibilities, and how far this brief can be pushed
- Create a wide range of resolutions... e.g. card boy is a range of products with hundreds of designs, and also has a website and apps, covering different medias
- Make sure it has a clear message, appropriate tone and effective media
4 Chosen Competition Briefs
In this workshop we thought about:
Five things I want to do in this module
1. Create work that can be used across a range of media and works to different scales and sizes
2. Create work that reflects who I am as a designer and that I can be proud of
3. Take care with presentation and explore printing processes
4. Focus on areas I haven't spent much time on yet
5. Create for a subject I am interested in
Five things I think I need to do
1. Lots of research that can interlink with my work development
2. Lots of design experimentation to find a design I am happy with
3. Use type more as I have previously focused on image
4. Create designs that are shown in context
5. Create for a range of medias
Five reasons why
1. I want to improve my final pieces
2. I want to continue to learn new skills
3. I want to improve my module grades by picking up on feedback
4. I want to push myself to do things I haven't done before
5. I want to create work I am proud of and confident in showing others
Things I want to improve
Personal
1. Confidence in work
2. Keep asking for feedback and work on it
3. Plan ahead, make sure I have enough time and money for an idea
4. Experiment, don't just stick to what I know
Practical
1. Quality of presentation of work
2. Improved type skills
3. Design context that interlinks with design practice
4. Photography of final piece
5. Look at a range of nets
Processess
1. Type and image based
2. Laser cutting
3. Digitally printed on to a range of stocks
4. Digitally made
5. Printed on to fabric
Products
1. Packaging
2. Website to promote
3. Picnic items: basket, plates, cups, napkins....
Contexts
1. Packaging
2. Promotion
Following this workshop we were set this task:
- Consider five reasons why you've chosen each brief
YCN// M&S
1. The brief is quite open in terms of theme, so there are lots of possibilities
2. There is a set outcome so I know what I need to produce
3. M&S eco friendly policy relates to my ethics, and is a chance to link in with critical studies sustainability issues
4. There is an opportunity to cover a range of medias with all the products that can be made
5. I would like to work with packaging more as it isn't something I've done much of
D&AD// SCOTCH WHISKEY
1. Again, the chance to work on packaging
2. They are looking for innovative, clever designs, which is what I want to produce
3. There is the idea of reinvention, changing what people automatically think about something, which is something I've noticed in most of these briefs
4. The problem is clear with a set outcome
5. This would be different to anything I've done before
ISTD// PUTTING ON A FRESH FACE
1. They want the answer to go outside the obvious, which is what I try to do when thinking of strong concepts for my briefs
2. They want other medias to be covered, such as apps and screen, which would allow me to try new things
3. Is a type based brief, which is something I need to spend more time on as I usually concentrate on image
4. They want a range of media to be covered with the branding
5. There is the chance to reinvent something and change opinions
1. I would enjoy this topic as I love children's books
2. I like the idea of marketing this book at adults also
3. Would be able to work with both print and screen
4. I need to use type more, and it is in the brief that type needs to be a focus
5. Again, the chance to reinvent, this time the traditional stories for a modern audience
- Write your own brief based on four chosen competition briefs and what you want to do [see blog post]
- Find initial research [primary research] [secondary research]
- Focus on why you're doing what you are before you start designing
Initial Idea
Mix of the YCN M&S brief and the Puffin brief... create a picnic basket that relates to a fairytale, cover a wide range of media and think about how this will be advertised, packaged etc. This also mixes in the other two briefs, with the aspects of reinvention, packaging, promotion, working both digital and print, working with a focus of type, and covering a range of medias.
