Top 10 Things... Music Choices

Song Choice Ideas

As I have been researching TV intros and idents, I have realised how important the choice of music is for a video for making it appeal to the right audience and give the show the right introduction. As I don't claim to know anything about music I will have to do lots of searching and asking other people for their recommendations, using a clearly defined concept of my tv show idea to find what I am looking for.

1. Classic song everyone knows, the first minute would fit perfectly into my intro, very upbeat so would mean the action in the intro would have to be quite fast, also I don't know if lyrics are too much
2. Quite unusual but still girly, would mean that the action in my video could be a bit slower
3. If I could loop the intro to a song like this I think it represents the vintage theme well
4. I like how the pace goes from slow to fast, would allow for interesting changes in action in the video, doesn't fit perfectly in to the 1 minute slot so would have to edit this
5. An example of 1950's music, I would like to find something like this with the background music only
6. I think something like this would work really well, as there are a mix of speeds, and without lyrics it is not too overpowering. This is really bad quality though so I need to find a good quality one.
7. This is a good quality 1950's instrumental, I'm not sure if it completely fits the theme, but I think I'd have to try a few songs with a few of my image mock ups to see what I think suited.
8. I've tried hard to find 'If I Knew You Were Coming I'd Have Baked A Cake' without the vocals, as this was recommended in a crit, but this is all I can find. While you can still tell what song it is supposed to be, I think it sounds childish rather than having the 1950's feel to it.
9. This is just another version of this song, but I feel like this one may be more suited to my piece.

Tech Issues Lecture With Lorraine

Despite looking at a few ideas, I still felt a bit unsure about sound choices, and was totally clueless as how to add them to my video in after effects, so I found the lecture with Lorraine useful:

- Two types of sound, effects and narration (ambient sound)
- Choose sound to re-enforce the graphics and communicate what your video is about, it is easy to go wrong and give off the wrong meaning (such as the inappropriate soundtracks we listened to)
- We looked at a showreel (digital portfolio of work), where the song that was picked spoilt the video, as the beats of the music did not fit with the movement of the graphics - you should time your beat
- While working through visual ideas for the storyboard, listen to your chosen song and map out when the key bits of the song are so you can design accordingly.
- Star guitar buy the Chemical Brothers is a good example of this

To get sound into after effects:
1. Import the file
2. Drag and drop into the left hand corner box
3. Box in top right corner determines how loud or quiet

4. Arrow with options such as levels
5. Ram preview (if it hits into red zone, it is going to be too loud, and if it goes it to the yellow zone, it will be too quiet, so try and keep it in the green zone)

- When you have chosen your song, hold down control as you listen, and when you hear a key point, hit 8 to mark it (useful for when you want to create movement to match the key beats)

- To fade up - make sound 0% in the top right hand box, then add a key point, then move along, then turn the volume up, and add another key point... And vice versa for the end of the song

- There are some audio effects and presets you can experiment with

- Label your layers if you are working between photoshop and after effects as otherwise you will get easily confused. You can group your layers and then turn them into different compositions, and then you can put a composition into a different composition to stop the screen getting too full with too many layers
- Sound files preferable in after effects are wav and aiff, but you can use mp3s, but beware of the possible loss in quality as these can be compressed twice
