Top 10 Things... Pattern Making

For my back drop for my video I am thinking about using a patterned background to suit the vintage 50's theme. I didn't know how to create one so I have followed some basic tutorials on youtube for both photoshop and illustrator.

1. SEAMLESS PATTERN

This became this...

I think this pattern would work a lot better if I had coloured in the cupcakes, and made the larger one a bit smaller so there wasn't so much of a difference between the big cupcake and the smaller one. However, for a first attempt, I think it is okay, and I would like to continue to experiment with learning how to create patterns. I think if I was using it as a back drop I would have to make the opacity very low so that it didn't distract from what else was going on.

2. PLAID

This plaid pattern was simple to make and I really like the colours; I think as there is not too much going on in this pattern that it would make a good back drop as it is not too distracting. Continuing on with the 50's housewife pattern theme, I would like to try out a floral pattern and a polka dot one.

3. FLORAL

Here I used the same video that I used in the first pattern experiment to create the cupcake seamless pattern, and used imagery from a downloaded font: MTF Funk Fusion. This style of pattern wouldn't really suit my 50's theme, but I just wanted to try making a floral pattern. The more patterns I'm creating, the easier its getting.

4. POLKA  DOT

Turning this into this...

This was a really easy pattern to create. I'd like to experiment with different size polka dots, as I think a bigger one might work better for my vintage theme, and I also need to consider which colours I would use as this can really effect the outcome. I can also think about layering this pattern over another one, but I need to be careful that the pattern stays as something in the background and doesn't get too busy.

5. GINGHAM

This one was so easy and looks good, really suiting my vintage housewife theme. This is a pattern I'll probably be using in my work, although I will need to choose more subtle colours that will work better in the background.

6. STRIPE

Again, this one was so simple, and will be useful to use in many projects.
