I think when I was making the book mock up, there were a lot of stages that I rushed, as I just wanted to get something together for the book. I put a lot of consideration in to the shape and size of the book, but when thinking of the colour scheme, page layout and font, I just rushed these decisions, going with what I automatically thought was right. Because of this, I felt really unmotivated by the designs I had produced. The book was just not working for its purpose and I felt a bit stuck with it.
Here I have tried out some ideas based on the designs I have looked at as I just wasn't sure where to start with this.
The design layout and font choices need to appeal to the target audience, be easy to read, and be able to work at the small A7 size.
I struggled for ages to find a font that was suitable for the target audience, but wasn't helvetica! I also wanted a font that was available in bold as well, to help me when formatting the book.
Love this font. (Edmond Sans, available in regular, medium and bold) I'm seeing a definite improvement in making the design more suitable for the audience already.
The books design needs to live up to the quotes inside. For example, be unique and break the rules did not exactly relate to the previous layout of the book, so I've tried to make the layout a bit more fun and interesting, such as with the random positioning of the page numbers.
This style of design is inspired by the international typographic style, which I have been researching to help me with my publication design. I feel like I have focused too much time of this brief considering what the actual quotes would look like, and ended up not paying attention to the layout of the pages, which was an important part.
I'm trying to work more to a grid structure, so that things are random but in an organised way, like the design examples I have been researching.
Here is where I am up to now with the book:
It's getting better! I think it still needs quite a bit more content to make it more of a substantial read because at the moment the copy is a bit limited. Also still need to do something about that yellow background. But its getting there. Its also missing something important... the quotes!
