My idea for this brief came through looking at the work shown in computer arts magazine, so I decided to start my design development with trying out some type tutorials. I plan to do at least one type tutorial a day to help me think more about using type only in my designs, as previously they had all been image based.

This is the image example on the computer arts website:
I've chosen to do this tutorial as the type is still quite image based and features patterns, so isn't too far away from what I am used to, and also, because it could potentially relate in to the designs I create for the stationery brief as well. I think this style of design and the colours used are quite current, and similar to other things I have been looking at on my design context blog.
Here are some screen shots of the steps I have taken to achieve the end product. I've learnt a few new tips for using in Indesign and photoshop too, such as cmd+alt+u to copy guides at even intersections.
First I set up the grid, then decided on the fonts I would use for my quote, "be better", which would be from my rule book, to motivate the student about always pushing themselves further.
I've added a few extras to a few of the letters to make them more interesting.
Playing about with the fonts used and how the letters looked was fun and the next step was to create patterns to place in them.
I created these patterns on photoshop by altering the gradients in different shapes and placing them over each other.
I made this pattern but when I tried it the colours didn't match in with the rest of the letters, so i've changed the colours to mean that it doesn't look too harsh amongst the rest.
My first layout didn't work quite right as I my quote didn't have as many letters in it so I needed to play about. I've not yet decided what format my book will be.
I'm really happy with this design for the result of a quick tutorial, its totally different from the type of things I've made before. I will see if this design turns into anything else in the future.
