Position Statements & Rationales
Need to be able to show a sense of skills that will be developed, contexts explored, contents researched and products made through these statements.
1. Competition Briefs
A type based, skills driven investigation of a few selected competition briefs from YCN, D&AD and ISTD with a focus on printed outcomes.
I am going to select a range of competition briefs from YCN, D&AD and ISTD with a focus on creating type based outcomes, because this is an area of my practice I want to focus on and a skill I need to improve.
Product / Range / Method of Distribution
Type based outcomes / Depends on brief / Depends on brief
[The YCN & D&AD briefs have not been released yet]
2. Stationery Design
An image based investigation of business and enterprise with a focus on stationery products and packaging
I am going to create a range of potentially sellable stationery designs featuring illustrations because I want to improve these skills, and because I need more experience of working towards live briefs.
Product / Range / Method of Distribution
Product and Packaging for stationery design / Greetings cards, Wrapping paper & tags, Stickers, Postcards, Notebooks, Photo Albums, Storage Boxes, Tea towels, Tote bags, T-shirts, Poster prints, Printed fabric scarves, & Possibly other outcomes / Online, craft fairs, shops
3. Graphic Design Rulebook
An editorial design based investigation of illustrative type with a focus on graphic design rules.
I am going to create a graphic design rulebook because I want to mix my interests with illustration and type in a brief that allows me to work on both of these skills, and because there is a gap in the market for a book for graphic design students which is useful, but still looks attractive.
Product / Range / Method of Distribution
Illustrative type rule book / Book, Merchandise including: bags, t-shirts / Online, shops, distributed in colleges to new students
4. Graphic Design Museum
A research driven investigation of the history of graphic design with a focus on exhibition design
I am going to propose the content and design for a graphic design museum because I want to learn more about the history of graphic design personally, and think that there is a gap in the market for a graphic design museum.
Product / Range / Method of Distribution
Graphic design museum identity / - Tour map - Adverts (different formats: magazine, billboard, bus etc) - Wall hangings - Leaflets about exhibition - Invite for the opening night, mail shot - Postcards / tote bags / t-shirts / products for shop - Signage around museum - Posters - Schools education pack / Competitions / opportunities to join in - Website / Social media set ups - Mock up of exhibit space - Room decorations (quotes on walls etc) - Door shrouds - Floor stickers - Outside banners / Some products would be featured inside the museum, some advertisements would be large scales such as bus stops, billboards etc and some would be small scale in magazines and on websites
