Product / Range / Distribution... [Vector Illustrations]

I had put off on creating my illustrations, as I had wanted this project to be mainly type based, and because I wasn't sure which direction I wanted to go. After feedback in my crit, and looking at different examples of inspiring imagery, I made a start. I have created the illustrations in the same way I have created the typeface, by hand drawing them, and then neatening them up using illustrator. The imagery I have created is all memorable imagery from the book that fans will instantly recognise. The lines are simple and clear. These images will cover the picnic carrier, with some being made in to a pattern, as well as the individual products that they relate to.

The things I have drawn are:
Tea cups, teapot, eat me cake, queen's tarts, pocket watch, playing cards, mad hatters hat, butter knife, drink me bottle, queens roses, mushrooms, and a slice of bread.

To add to the quirky style, I have looked at imagery such as that from Salvadoor Dali, such as this watch, which was an inspiration when drawing the pocket watch. The tea cups, as seen at Disney land Paris for the Mad Hatter's tea cup ride, have been the inspiration for all the cutlery I have drawn.

These are the scans of the drawings:

I then picked which ones were my favourite, and used the live trace tool to turn these to vectors.

However, as you can see, my vectors weren't neat and didn't really look crisp and clean like I had pictured them. These screenshots show what the images looked like before I neatened up all the lines.

This took a lot longer than I had planned for but I am really happy with the final imagery and now I need to make sure that my packaging shows off this to the full extent.

Colour

I tried experiments with colour as I had originally been inspired with some really simple but effective one colour illustrations from Lemon Ribbon and Rob Ryan...

I knew that I wanted to keep with my four colour scheme and when I tried using colour in this way I wasn't happy with the results, and thought that the illustrations would look more sophisticated if they were in black and white rather than colour, as this could make them look childish. I tried the outlines in different colours but decided black was probably best for now.. but I might change my mind later.
