HYPHENATION AND JUSTIFICATION
- Numerical control of size and positioning of frames. The nine squares allow you to change the position of the anchor point of the frame. Useful for when using two frames to make sure they are aligned.
- To get a frame to exactly half the size, type: '/' divided by the number you want to divide it by and then press enter and the frame will automatically change size.
- In the paragraph options, the hyphenation settings can be changed, rather than turning them all off, it can be altered so a few are shown.
- Type -> Insert special character -> Hyphens and dashes -> Discretionary hyphen
- Show hidden characters. The symbol on the left is for a normal hyphen and the one on the right is for a discretionary one.
- Justification settings can be applied to justified text to change whole paragraph settings.
CHARACTER STYLES
- Edit text, select text and then can create a new character style to be added to other words. Size isn't associated with character style.
- Can make paragraph styles altering things such as hanging headings as we looked at last week. Can use a character style in a paragraph style, in the nested options.
- To save character styles, save the document. Then open the new document, and on the character styles options, load character styles, and find the saved indesign document with the styles you want. You can select which styles you want to load. This is a bit like swatches in illustrator.
MASTER PAGES
- Master pages - any content you apply to this can apply to other pages that are based on the master page. This is useful if something needs to be on every single page, such as a text frame.
- Double click on the master pages to get them open to edit. You can see if the left hand corner if you are on the right page.
- This is an example of how this can work and save time and ensure accuracy. The 'A' symbol shows that these are pages which are based on the master frame.
- When you look at your document pages, you will see that the master page items are locked so you don't accidentally move them. (Cmd + shift + click if you need to unlock on that page)
- Drag the none on to a page if you don't want it to be a master page and it will no longer be based on this.
- On the master page: Type -> Insert special character -> Markers -> Current page number
Gives you an 'A' on the master page, and the numbers of the proper pages. Need to apply it to both the left and right master page.
- Go to pages palette options -> numbering and section options. Can alter when the numbering starts etc.
- This black arrow over a page indicates the start of a section. In these options can change the section marker.
PRINTING
- File -> Booklet Print -> 2 up Saddle stitch -> print settings ->
*options: print blank pages -> tick
*setup: options -> center page position
*paper size -> A3 (if each page is a4) and make landscape
*marks and bleed -> apply relevant marks
- Preview shows how things would be arranged such as with the saddle stitch diagram
- Printer button: choose short-edge binding from the two sided printer options.
- Printer -> postScript file -> these settings -> print -> save file .ps (a bit like a pdf)
- There is a limit to the number of pages you can put together in one saddle stitch pamphlet, otherwise it will get too thick. So need to have a few of these pamphlets. In the printing options you can decide how many sheets of paper will go in each section. So on the set-up alter the range numbers per section.
