DP3/ Brief 3/ Design Development/ Type Tutorial 3.

http://www.computerarts.co.uk/tutorials/use-glyphs-create-striking-typographic-poster-indesign

I didn't really know what to expect with this tutorial, I just did it because I liked the example of the typographic poster that was shown with it. But I ended up really liking the end outcome and found this so fun to do. I have received good feedback when showing this design to others as well so it might be something I take further in to my design development.

This brief is all about using the available glyphs for a font to re-create your message. I think its quite relevant to a lot of the trends in graphic design at the moment.

I went for arial as there are so many glyph choices and spent ages playing about with writing my message.

I then neatened up the type a bit (although it could have done with a lot more work), such as trying to make the letters a more equal size.

I added a gradient background.. think I could still play around with all of this but still pretty impressed with the result.

I tried to write out a different quote in this style but don't think this one has worked. Need to play around and maybe try the glyphs from different fonts.

DP3/ Brief 3/ Design Development/ Type Tutorial 2.

http://www.computerarts.co.uk/tutorials/design-classic-serif-poster

I chose to do this tutorial because I really liked the example graphic poster it showed with the tutorial. Mine hasn't turned out that great, but I think that is partly to do with the background. I think with a bit more playing about I might have got something a bit better, but I enjoyed playing around with the text.

The idea is that the text is supposed to flow, so that is why it is really close together, and where possible, points are touching on the bottom of one letter and the top of another for example.

To get the vintage effect, I've used a vintage text background and then applied a gradient fill over the top, and added noise to give it the textured speckle. I think the use of this is a bit overwhelming here and the text should be bigger.

The final outcome isn't great but I would like to try again with a different font and quote maybe because this tutorial has got me thinking more about how to lay type out. I think the words where the text connects (you, get, only) look the best.

DP3/ Brief 3/ Design Development/ Type Tutorial 1.

My idea for this brief came through looking at the work shown in computer arts magazine, so I decided to start my design development with trying out some type tutorials. I plan to do at least one type tutorial a day to help me think more about using type only in my designs, as previously they had all been image based.

http://www.computerarts.co.uk/tutorials/harness-cs6-s-vector-shape-tools

This is the image example on the computer arts website:
I've chosen to do this tutorial as the type is still quite image based and features patterns, so isn't too far away from what I am used to, and also, because it could potentially relate in to the designs I create for the stationery brief as well. I think this style of design and the colours used are quite current, and similar to other things I have been looking at on my design context blog.

Here are some screen shots of the steps I have taken to achieve the end product. I've learnt a few new tips for using in Indesign and photoshop too, such as cmd+alt+u to copy guides at even intersections.
First I set up the grid, then decided on the fonts I would use for my quote, "be better", which would be from my rule book, to motivate the student about always pushing themselves further.

I've added a few extras to a few of the letters to make them more interesting.

Playing about with the fonts used and how the letters looked was fun and the next step was to create patterns to place in them.

I created these patterns on photoshop by altering the gradients in different shapes and placing them over each other.

I made this pattern but when I tried it the colours didn't match in with the rest of the letters, so i've changed the colours to mean that it doesn't look too harsh amongst the rest.

My first layout didn't work quite right as I my quote didn't have as many letters in it so I needed to play about. I've not yet decided what format my book will be.

I'm really happy with this design for the result of a quick tutorial, its totally different from the type of things I've made before. I will see if this design turns into anything else in the future.

DP3/ Brief 4/ Graphic Design Museum Brief: Final Copy

Brief

To create the branding and identity for a Graphic Design Museum, educating visitors on the history of the subject and containing features such as: a gallery of work, examples of technology and processes used, and profiles of famous designers. A focus will also be on the tools used to create graphic design, including photography, technology and the internet.

This brief would be a research brief, allowing me to understand more myself about the history of Graphic Design, but also allowing me to work on lots of areas of my design practice including:
Publishing and editorial, Information and way finding, Branding and identity

Background / Considerations

- Where would this be?
- How would this be funded?
- Why do I think there should be a graphic design museum?
- Who would attend the opening night private view?
- What style of graphics will the target audience respond best to?

Mandatory Requirements

- The printed designs for the museum should have a focus on sustainable design
- There should be a consistent design throughout all of the products
- The exhibition needs to stand out from what is already available
- The museum needs to be engaging and interesting to attract visitors
- It should be interactive and appeal to the target audience of family visitors

Possible Deliverables

- Branding and identity for the museum- Tour map
- Adverts (different formats: magazine, billboard, bus etc)
- Wall hangings
- Leaflets about exhibition
- Invite for the opening night, mailshot
- Postcards / tote bags / tshirts / products for shop
- Signage around museum
- Posters
- Schools education pack / Competitions / opportunities to join in
- Website / Social media set ups
- Mock up of exhibit space
- Room decorations (quotes on walls etc)
- Door shrouds
- Floor stickers
- Outside banners
_________________________________

Rationale

A research driven investigation of the history of graphic design with a focus on branding and identity and exhibition design.

Statement of Intent

I am going to propose the content and design for a graphic design museum because I want to learn more about the history of graphic design, and think that there is a gap in the market for a graphic design museum. By creating the proposed products I will improve my branding, publishing and signage skills.

DP3/ Brief 3/ Graphic Design Rulebook Brief: Final Copy

Brief

The graphic design rule book will be a hand made book featuring hand rendered illustrative type with inspiring quotes and rules/tips for the aspiring graphic designer (target audience - graphic design degree students). I will also consider the packaging of the book, and other products that could be included.

This brief would be a skills driven brief, where I could mix my need to learn more about typography with my existing interest and skills in image based design. The book would allow me to improve my Publishing and editorial & Product and packaging skills.

Background / Considerations

How would this book be promoted?
Where would it be sold?
How many would need to be made?
How much would it cost to buy?
How would these specifications effect design decisions?
Which quotes would be included?

Mandatory Requirements

The book has to appeal to the target audience
The book should have a focus on the hand made feel
The book needs to be useful and fulfil its purpose as well as looking good

Deliverables

Graphic Design Rulebook
Packaging for book
Gift to accompany rulebook (Such as totebag etc.)
________________________

Rationale

An editorial design based investigation of illustrative type with a focus on graphic design rules for aspiring designers.

Statement of Intent
I am going to create a graphic design rulebook because I want to mix my interests with illustration and type in a brief that allows me to work on both of these skills, and because there is a gap in the market for a book for graphic design students which is useful, but still looks attractive.

DP3/ Brief 2/ Stationery Design Brief: Draft Copy

Brief

I will create a range of sellable decorative handmade stationery/gift products, with the help of surface pattern designers. (See deliverables.) I will then design the packaging of these products, which will potentially be sold online or at craft fairs. I would then need to promote the sale of these items.

This brief will hopefully be a live brief, and will include collaborations. It will allow me to focus on improving product and packaging skills, as well as working on my image skills.

Background / Considerations

How much will these products be sold for?
Where will these products be sold?
How many will be made of each product?
Where will the products be printed?

Mandatory Requirements

The products must be made to the highest quality to ensure they are suitable for sale
A contract must be written between the collaborators to ensure all parties are happy

Deliverables

Greetings cards
Wrapping paper & tags
Stickers
Postcards
Notebooks
Photo Albums
Storage Boxes
Tea towels
Tote bags
T-shirts
Poster prints
Printed fabric scarves
& Possibly other outcomes

____________________

Rationale
An image based investigation of business and enterprise with a focus on stationery products and packaging featuring collaborative designs.

Statement of Intent
I am going to create a range of potentially sellable stationery designs featuring illustrations because I want to improve these skills, and because I need more experience of working towards live briefs and with other designers.

DP3/ Brief 1/ Competition Brief: Final Copy

Brief
To enter at least 1 competition brief with a substantial amount of work produced, from either a YCN, D&AD or ISTD brief, with the intention of creating a type only response.

The work I create may cover a mixture of these areas, but the general purpose is to allow me to learn more about typography.

- Publishing and editorial - Information and way finding - Branding and identity - Product and packaging - Retail and promotion

Background / Considerations

I will need to learn more about typography, to try and catch up on the things I didn't learn through not taking this module in 2nd year.

Mandatory Requirements

Each outcome must be type only
Each outcome must try something new
Important type skills must be learnt through each competition brief answered

Deliverables

The deliverables will depend on what each individual competition brief is asking, but as the focus here is on the type skills rather than the presentation of the finished product, many outcomes may be poster design.
___________________________________
Rationale
A type based, skills driven investigation of a few selected competition briefs from YCN, D&AD and ISTD with a focus on printed outcomes.

Statement of Intent
I am going to select a range of competition briefs from YCN, D&AD and ISTD with a focus on creating type based outcomes, because this is an area of my practice I want to focus on and a skill I need to improve.

Significant Negotiated Briefs: Final 4

OLD >>

These are the statements for my final four chosen briefs to take to the group tutorial to discuss.

I have combined a few briefs to make them more substantial, and I have left some briefs which will be more relevant later on in the year that I want to focus on for my FMP:
Fashion Collaboration
Surface Pattern Yearbook
Feminist Magazine
LCA Degree signage competitions

Workshop 3: Time Plan

Time Plan

How long are they going to take?
What needs to be done when?
When will the deadline be?

.. 70 and a half days to go ..

Design Process

1. Idea generation
2. Research and investigation
3. Concept development and clarification
4. Design development
5. Evaluation and selection
6. Production and resolution
7. Presentation and submission

Task

Make a timeline for each brief, splitting it in to ten sections including all of the design processes, and how long they should take. Bare in mind that things never go to plan. You always have to allow for something to go wrong. Due to the nature of each brief being different, the time spent on different parts of the process will vary.

I found it quite hard to exactly plan my time for the four briefs because of how I'm certain things will change as my ideas develop. Also, things aren't necessarily always done in the same order, and some things you start, and then have to go back to.

This task has got me thinking about how I need to make the most of every moment here though. I'm going to find my own way of planning my time so each brief gets a fair amount of time spent on it.

Workshop 2: Cross Referencing Briefs with Rationale [Final Statements]

Position Statements & Rationales

Need to be able to show a sense of skills that will be developed, contexts explored, contents researched and products made through these statements.

1. Competition Briefs

A type based, skills driven investigation of a few selected competition briefs from YCN, D&AD and ISTD with a focus on printed outcomes.

I am going to select a range of competition briefs from YCN, D&AD and ISTD with a focus on creating type based outcomes, because this is an area of my practice I want to focus on and a skill I need to improve.

Product / Range / Method of Distribution
Type based outcomes / Depends on brief / Depends on brief
[The YCN & D&AD briefs have not been released yet]

2. Stationery Design

An image based investigation of business and enterprise with a focus on stationery products and packaging

I am going to create a range of potentially sellable stationery designs featuring illustrations because I want to improve these skills, and because I need more experience of working towards live briefs.

Product / Range / Method of Distribution
Product and Packaging for stationery design / Greetings cards, Wrapping paper & tags, Stickers, Postcards, Notebooks, Photo Albums, Storage Boxes, Tea towels, Tote bags, T-shirts, Poster prints, Printed fabric scarves, & Possibly other outcomes / Online, craft fairs, shops

3. Graphic Design Rulebook

An editorial design based investigation of illustrative type with a focus on graphic design rules.

I am going to create a graphic design rulebook because I want to mix my interests with illustration and type in a brief that allows me to work on both of these skills, and because there is a gap in the market for a book for graphic design students which is useful, but still looks attractive.

Product / Range / Method of Distribution

Illustrative type rule book / Book, Merchandise including: bags, t-shirts / Online, shops, distributed in colleges to new students

4. Graphic Design Museum

A research driven investigation of the history of graphic design with a focus on exhibition design

I am going to propose the content and design for a graphic design museum because I want to learn more about the history of graphic design personally, and think that there is a gap in the market for a graphic design museum.

Product / Range / Method of Distribution
Graphic design museum identity / - Tour map - Adverts (different formats: magazine, billboard, bus etc) - Wall hangings - Leaflets about exhibition - Invite for the opening night, mail shot - Postcards / tote bags / t-shirts / products for shop - Signage around museum - Posters - Schools education pack / Competitions / opportunities to join in - Website / Social media set ups - Mock up of exhibit space - Room decorations (quotes on walls etc) - Door shrouds - Floor stickers - Outside banners / Some products would be featured inside the museum, some advertisements would be large scales such as bus stops, billboards etc and some would be small scale in magazines and on websites

Workshop 2: Cross Referencing Briefs with Rationale

Notes:
- Briefs needed to be decided on by next Friday when they will be submitted
- Sheet needs to be filled in for tutorial next week
- Research document: things you intend to do, things you have done (use as a bibliography) Hand in at the end. Be specific.
- Track what you intended to do, whats changed, how its changed and why - track progress and project management
- Decisions: what, why and timescales.
- ISTD briefs are good examples of how to write a thorough brief
- Submission sheets: additional briefs are in case you need another brief: short, live, competition, etc.

Workshop: What you want to do vs. What you need to do [Development]

Follows on from this workshop...

DEVELOPMENT...

At the end of the first workshop, we were set our next task, to keep adding to the sheets, and think about the questions. We need a minimum of 20 responses for each column and a bit more detail for each.

We then need to identify 10 ultimate things that we want and 10 that we need to do from across all sheets and state why.

What you WANT to do sets you apart from others - INNOVATION is driven by you - NEED is driven by the industry.
