Take a couple of dead competition briefs (past deadline) and use them to help you write your own proposal for next year, allowing you to investigate which areas you are interested in.
The preparatory research will be finding your area of focus and finding some examples of this. The outcome can be print, digital or a mix of media.
5 Core Areas: (All may be inter-related)
- publishing & editorial
- information & wayfinding
- branding & identity
- product & packaging
- retail & promotion

Task
Look through the competition briefs and choose 1 d&ad, 1 ycn, 1 istd and 1 other brief. Analyse why you chose it, is it because of the subject matter or deliverables? Etc....
There will later be a workshop about how to make these in to our own brief
Looking Through The Briefs
I started out by finding which ones were relevant and may be of interest before deciding on the four I'd be re-writing in the workshop after Easter. Having already looked at the YCN briefs, I knew which briefs I definitely didn't want to do already. Some of the briefs are really badly written so I would have to have a really good look in to them if that was what I wanted to do.
Here are all the briefs I have considered:

PENGUIN
Grimm's Fairy Tales by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm
From the land of fantastical castles, vast lakes and deep forests, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm collected a treasury of fairy stories full of giants and dwarfs, witches and princesses, magical beasts and cunning children. From classics such as 'The Frog-Prince' and 'Hansel and Grettel' to the delights of 'Ashputtel' or 'Old Sultan', all hold a timeless magic which has enthralled children for centuries.
Grimm's Fairy Tales has been translated into more than 160 languages and was first published in English in 1812. Puffin will be celebrating the book's 200th anniversary in 2012.
Students are invited to design a whole new cover look for this classic, in order to reinventGrimm's Fairy Tales for a new generation of readers, encouraging children (and adults) to revisit it time and time again, and ensuring that it remains an integral part of childhood.
Your cover design needs to include all the cover copy as supplied and be designed to the specified design template (cut-down B format, 178mm high x 129mm wide, spine 28.2mm wide).

The condition of women has undergone undeniable improvements during the last century. But these improvements haven’t happened everywhere and even where they have been the strongest, well, they are far from being strong enough.
Gender inequality still lingers unchallenged: it’s one of those things that are hard to see precisely because they are right in front of our eyes.
That’s why we ask all of you to see beyond the status quo and imagine a different future. We need gender equality now, because more opportunities for women are more opportunities for us all.
