- Rationale and blank brief need to be filled in for next week
- Produce a self-initiated body of work to cover 6 weeks (3 taught sessions and 3 over easter)
- Base your work upon an existing brief we have done in image and extend it
- Needs to be a final product at the end
- Doesn't have to be exactly similar to a brief, can be loosely based on it
- Put work into a context rather than drawing from the sake of it
- Remember the focus is on image
Briefs to choose from are:
1- editorial
2- type as image
3- scale / frame / format
4- 2d to 3d to 2d
5- book works
6- d&ad poster
Initial Ideas
In brackets I have the put the brief these ideas were inspired by.
- Re-create the images from a book [1]
- Re-create an image from the guardian everyday [1]
- Posters responding to a series of quotes [2]
- Create a book drawing an object from different sides, scales etc [3]
- Bring a series of drawings to life [4]
- Bring a well known book/fairytale to life and photograph this [4]
- Create an interactive book for children [5]
- A series of posters about why things that aren't usually liked should be [6]
My favourite idea so far seems to be doing something about re-creating the images for a fairytale, but I want to go beyond the obvious. I could possibly create images for a book that doesn't already have images, so I really had to use my imagination. One step further than this would be actually physically creating the objects, like with paper craft, and then photographing them, and printing them out and making them in to a book, but I don't know if this would be possible or if I am being a little too ambitious. If this is what I do end up doing, it would be a mixture of the book works brief and the 2d / 3d / 2d brief.
I need to think about which books to look at and who my target audience is. I've done a lot of work to do with children's books before so this is something I want to avoid as I want to try new things and learn more. I also don't want to create work for something which has already been many times before, such as alice in wonderland, as I want my work to be special.
Ideas for books I could look at:
- secret garden
- james and the giant peach
- wind in the willows
- narnia
- gullivers travels
- jack and the beanstalk
- willy wonka
- hanzel and gretel
- wizard of oz
- peter pan
- the lion the witch and the wardrobe
- to kill a mockingbird
- rapunzel
- charlotte's web
So, I've chosen Secret Garden, as its a classic book, not limited to children, and I have the opportunity to create some beautiful imagery. Its obviously well known but the imagery isn't used to the extent of books such as Alice in Wonderland. I will begin by reading the book, and doing some initial design research, before I start drawing some illustrations.
Here is my plan for my final piece:
- I will draw 2d images of scenes from the books
- I will then make these images 3d through paper craft
- I will then photograph these images
- These final photographs will be printed and bound in to a beautiful book
- The development and initial images will be printed and bound in to a book
As this might sound very ambitious, I'm not going to take on the whole book, just a few key scenes. I won't limit myself to how many yet. Next, I'll write up my rationale and turn this into a brief and get started!
