YCN... Images

Editing the way images are displayed

RESEARCH

This image from the Forever 21 website has inspired me to think about altering how I will place the images on the website design. I like how the typography is equally important for getting an idea of what the shop's style is, and works well with the image, which isn't something I have seen in the other websites. I'm going to have an experiment and hopefully get the vintage style across in my type as well, inspired by vintage graphic design examples I have found such as this:

I've chosen the font Perpetua as its quite elegant and I thought this would work well with the vintage style elements. I've downloaded some fonts with swirls and other things I can experiment with. Here are some examples:

MY EXAMPLES

I've started off by applying vintage filters to the photographs I will be using. I've chosen ones from the Summer range, as the proposed re-launch for the website is for about the same time that the summer ranges would be coming in to the shops.

- Vintage filter - Edge vignette light - Edge sharpen - Kick it filter

I've then put this image with text based on the research I have initially done. I've applied the chalk border to the edges of the images to make them a bit more unique than if they were just neat. This is something that I wanted to do after seeing a similar kind of style on the anthropology website.

I like this mix of image of text and there is even a link in the corner to take you to the range. I've taken the colour from the photograph but I'm not sure I like it or if it looks a bit too close to the colour of foundation, so I'm going to try some more colour choices.

I much prefer this pink colour, but now I'm not sure the red works against it. I think this style only works with really simple text, where, as this box is advertising a competition, there needs to be more information. I think a busier style, like my initial one with an image would work better.

I've tried to use  a mix here, but as theres quite a lot of information to get across I just don't think its working. I've experimented with the vintage swirls, but I think they were making it look a bit too victorian style rather than the new vintage summer style I was going for. I think for this image, I'm just not going to give away too much information, and let the details of the competition be explained when the viewer clicks on the links. This needs to look good as its on the home page, so I don't want it to look out of place.

I've used the set up of an image below for this, replacing one of the images with a blank space to put just a simplistic teaser of what the competition is about. However, I really don't want too much of this colour, and I don't think this uneven style works. I'm getting really frustrated now with this!

Continuing with the simplistic style... might continue to edit this later but for now think it looks better than the previous attempts!

MY EXAMPLES

I think these examples are much more interesting than just neatly placing the photographs next to each other. I've taken each image in to illustrator after editing in photoshop, and applied the chalk border. I've also used Pearl and Daisy's logos in the designs.

I wasn't sure which style I preferred, but Chloe preferred the layout of these images so we've decided these will work best on the website design.
