Task
What skills do you have? (As an individual and a designer?) What skills do you require to reflect your skills? You need to challenge each other, learn new skills, and do more than you could on your now. Someone with different skills. What are your weaknesses? Who will make you win D&AD?
Create 2 a3 portrait posters designed in a way that will make them stand out to sell yourself so that someone chooses you to work with them. These posters will be put up anonymously in the studio for everyone to chose who they will work with through the content and design of the posters.
We were given less than two hours to create these posters, but working under pressure really motivated me. I didn't spend as long thinking up ideas as I would usually, but the pressure to get on with it helped to me to work faster. It was hard thinking of my skills and how I can sell myself as I don't feel very confident in myself as a designer but here is what I came up with:
Things To Promote About Yourself
1. Illustration
2. Organisation
3. Writing
4. Hard working
5. Idea generation
6. Determined
7. Problem solving

Things You Are Looking For
1. Typography
2. Software skills
3. Crafting/presentation skills
4. Similar hardworking ethics
5. Confidence - not afraid to experiment
6. Photography
I shortened these down so that I had five skills and was looking for five things. I then thought of a few ideas of how I could design my posters to stand out from the others:
- Job hire
- Love ad in the newspaper
- Cheesy love notes as inspired by valentines day cards (perfect pair, perfect match...)
- Dictionary definition of ideal
Why choose me?
I am a HARD-WORKING
graphic designer, with diverse skills,
specialising in ILLUSTRATION.
I am very ORGANISED and count
IDEA GENERATION and
WRITING SKILLS as strong points.
What I'm looking for?
I am looking for a graphic designer
with a similar HARD-WORKING
ethic, who has contrasting skills to
compliment mine, ideally with a
knowledge of TYPOGRAPHY and
good SOFTWARE SKILLS so we
can learn from each other..
PRESENTATION QUALITY skills
and a desire to learn new things
and EXPERIMENT would be perfect.

Design Development
Here are some screen shots of my design development to create these posters. I think it is quite obvious that I made these posters for people who know my style. Looking back at these afterwards, I don't think the fonts work too well together, and I think more negative space would have made the posters look more professional. I really like the colour scheme I have chosen. As someone who is image based, the simple illustration doesn't reflect my skills but I am happy with the overall design when I consider the little amount of time I had to create it.

Final Posters
Choosing a Partner
We had to put our posters up anonymously. The first poster I put up was the pick me one. Then we each got two pieces of paper, and chose two different posters to stick a note to, one with five reasons why you have chosen the poster due to the content and one with five reasons due to the design. This session was very nerve wracking as I was worried about who I would end up working with, or if no one would choose me.
Here are the comments on the note I received:
1.
Hierarchy of information
Simple layout
Used space well in the design
Personal
Contrary to my style of design
We then had to put our poster of what we were looking for up. Then we had to attach to notes, this time with reasons of why we fitted the criteria on the posters.
Here are the comments I received:
1.
I feel I am all of these
2.
[I am]
Type driven
Good knowledge of software
Overly picky about end design outcome and want to be right
Want to experiment a lot
Work hard
After this task, we had to work out who we were working with. Chloe asked me to work with her, and I said yes as her poster had been one of the ones I had put a note on because the content of her poster stood out to me.
Contract
We then had to write out our own contracts. We started off by writing our own, without discussing it first, then afterwards we discussed what we had both put and created a joint contract. It was reassuring to find out that although we have different skills what we want to achieve is the same.
My Contract
Joint Contract
Tomorrow we will look through the YCN briefs and see which one we would like to work on.
