Top 10 Things... Idents on After Effects... 3

3. This is the storyboard I will be basing this ident on, which was inspired by the big bang theory, where the images flash on so quickly, allowing for lots of information to be shown in a short space of time.

I had to work out a way for the layers to appear and then disappear, but when I made this sequence as planned, it looked too boring. I wanted to try out some 3d angles, as inspired by the QI and Hustle intro sequences. I took a tutorial online, but recreating the 3d effect proved to be very very complicated.

I spent a long time playing around before I got there. All this complicated animation and key frames for a few seconds of ident seems ridiculous at times. I am starting to think that I should have used this effect for my main intro, and then it could have lasted longer.

There are going to be so many layers of editing for this that I hope that it works. I had to keep playing about with the pacing, as I realised otherwise this clip was going to last for a long time, so instead of a twirl of the cupcake lasting 1 second, I decided on 0.5 seconds.

Each cupcake is getting closer to the edge when it is going off screen. I feel clever now I have mastered this! There have been quite a few problems on the way, but heres where I am up to now:

I've decided to come back to this ident to work on it. (Having just finished ident 4) I don't want it to begin with the same cupcake that the first ident did, but I think it would be easier to edit the cupcake on the first ident than re-arrange the order of the cupcakes on this one.

I also added the dark bit to the end, as I want all the endings to be the same.

I need to really work on the text at the end as it would be a shame to ruin hours of 3d editing with boring text. Playing the video back, I realised it doesn't even say top ten in it! I experimented with a few things, such as continuing with the 3d theme. I tried to add a range selector as this is something I had done in an after effects workshop.

I tried skewing the text, just experimenting to add that extra touch, but it doesn't look right. I don't want an overload of crazy effects, but I want my ident to be interesting.

I was playing around with what I learnt in after effects workshop 4, animating the scale.

I do like this effect but think it is best to start it when the text has reached its final position to avoid too much happening at once.

After changing the text so that I was happy with it, I went back and tweaked the positioning of the cupcakes, and made it start with just the patterned background to make it less cluttered. Watching it back I realised the text needs to stay on a lot longer to make it readable. I also took out the rotation of cupcake flavours text out to make it easier to read.

Just when I thought I was nearly there, I starting having so many problems with things changing themselves. I was getting really frustrated, and wish I'd saved my 3d stuff as a separate composition then imported it rather than having to redo stuff I've already spent hours editing because I've messed something up somehow.

I am probably making this very complicated for myself but need to get around the layers being in the wrong order, so this is what I have done. In the end after so much editing I think it looks alright.

I then thought, for my idents to look professional and realistic, the information at the end should be displayed in the same position in each ident. Here is a screen shot of what the positioning was in this ident before editing.

Here is a screen shot of the ending of the ident I have just finished.

I liked the text better in this one, but the positioning and size of the bbc logo better in the other one, so I ended up going back and changing the text at the end of the other one, as well as changing the positioning of the bbc two logo on this one.

This is the final ending, and I will use this text and positioning on the other idents.

Here is my final ident video:
